I was at a friend's place once and someone spilled a glass of red wine on her rug. There are several ways to deal with it(salt, white wine, soda water, bi-carb), they tried them all. (I whacked a pile of serviettes under the mat to protect her actual carpet.) The wine stain just got bigger and turned a funny colour, so my friend rolled it up and put it in her shed. When she went to show her brother a couple of weeks later, the stain was completely gone!
