Converted

When I  moved (a whole three weeks ago!) I could not find the dish sponge in the kitchen related box so I used a knitted cloth from the linen cupboard.  I had been gifted a couple, and made a few but the kids had been using then in the bath.

I won't go back to the old sponge now, I have been converted!  The knitted dishcloth is wonderful.  I have discovered that the darker cotton colours hold up best and it is wonderful to be able to toss it in the machine every few cycles.  The Mythbusters would be happy!  Hard to believe that the little kitchen sponge was the dirtiest thing they tested beating even the dreaded public toilet, ick!

There are heaps of free patterns on Ravelry and it is a good chance to test some new stitches or techniques.   I am overdue for a giveaway so maybe I should knit one and see if I can convert someone else too :)

  1. Kitchen sponges are the most horridly dirty germy things. Eeeew!
Knitted washcloths are so much lovelier, and they dry out quickly meaning that they don't harbour those yucky germs.

  2. Woo hoo! Knitted and crochet dishcloths are great! And they're really good to practice different techniques on, too. I recently ordered a whole stack of cotton from bendigo woollen mills so I can make a stack of new dishcloths!

  3. Glad you like the knitted dishcloths. I've not been convinced yet but I do agree about the sponges having the most bacteria. Although the bacteria found on the toilet seat are far more deadly than those on the sponge.

  4. Ive crochet 2, but STILL havnt sewn in the ends to use them. I started using some biggish face washers we didnt use - they are fantastic - love that you can throw them in the wash when ever they even start to get a bit yuck and not feel like you are wastng them. Your kintted ones look so much prettier though!

  6. Blossy, the Mythbusters link in the post shows that they tested not only the number of colonies, but also how harmfull they are, and the dish sponge still ended up worse than a public toilet! Amazing stuff!

  7. I'd always thought sponges were bad, but that bad? Ewwww ..... never used a knitted or crocheted dishcloth before but might give it a try. It has to be cotton, yeah?

  8. Vicky, yes it has to be cotton, and I like dark colours best.
